You can locate books in Raynor Library based on an item's call number. Use the Library Search to find the desired item and its call number.

Books available to checkout will have a call number following “Available at.” For example, the book Building Bones: Bone Formation and Development in Anthropology is Available at Raynor LIBRARY STACKS - LEMONIS LEVEL 3 (GN70.B85 2017). The book's call number is listed at the end within parentheses. In this case, GN70.B85 2017 is the call number.

“Available at” also provides insight into the book’s location within the library. This book is located on Lemonis Level 3. The library floor plan map shows the layout of the call numbers. Click on the “Map It” button to display the exact location.

Once you have found the correct stacks based on the first letters within the call number, the books are organized in number order, meaning you will find GN70 after GN69 and before GN71. The next section of identifiers is read like decimals. For example, GN70 B85 comes before GN70 B97. Sometimes, the call number will include the year the book was published at the end, which will help you identify the correct edition.

Call numbers are unique identifiers that indicate where a book is in a library. They appear on the spine of books and in the library's catalog. Raynor Library uses the Library of Congress classification system comprising of letters and numbers. You can browse books based on subject area by using call numbers. Similar books will be located on the shelves nearby, and you can use the Library of Congress Classification Outline to determine specific subject areas to browse. For example, GN includes items on Anthropology, whereas GB includes items on Physical Geography.
