Reserve a research carrel

Graduate students and faculty may apply for a research carrel. Applications may be submitted online or in person at the Library Services Desk.

Graduate student research carrels are assigned each semester and can be renewed twice. Research carrel assignments for graduate students follow this priority order:

• Doctoral students who are writing their dissertation while they remain on campus
• Master’s candidates who are writing their thesis while they remain on campus
• Other graduate students not currently writing a dissertation or thesis

Faculty research carrels are assigned annually and can be renewed once. Research carrel assignments for current faculty follow this priority order:

• Junior faculty
• Faculty on sabbatical who are remaining at the University to pursue research

Faculty can submit applications for annual research carrels between May 1 and June 1. Applications outside of this window will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Library materials kept in research carrels must be checked out. Carrels come furnished with a chair, desk, shelf, and wastebasket. While not in use, research carrels should always be locked. Library staff monitor research carrels but are not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
